Bridging the Gap to Secondary Education
In Tanzania, the transition from primary to secondary school presents a major challenge for many children. Primary education is delivered in Swahili, while secondary education is taught in English. This sudden change in the language of instruction often becomes a significant barrier to learning.
For the most vulnerable children, including orphans, those who have been abandoned, former street children and survivors of abuse or child labour, this transition can mark the end of their education altogether. Without support, they face limited opportunities for independence and a secure future.
A Lifeline for Vulnerable Learners
The Pre-Form 1 Course is a ten-week residential programme based in Moshi Town, designed to support children at risk of dropping out of education. These children often face a wide range of complex challenges, and the course provides a supportive and structured environment to help them prepare for the next stage of their education.
The programme includes:

An introduction to English language skills

Core academic subjects including Maths and Science

Life skills training such as healthy living, cooking and personal hygiene

Individual welfare and pastoral support
Our aim is to equip each child with the skills, knowledge and confidence to continue their education and take control of their future.
Proven Impact
The Pre-Form 1 Course is our flagship programme. It is supported by a strong system of monitoring and evaluation to ensure each child’s progress is tracked carefully.
Children complete assessments in English, Maths and Science at the beginning and end of the course. In previous years, students have shown an average improvement of 40 percentage points over the ten-week period.
The 2025 Programme
This year, we received over 200 applications from across Tanzania. Over the past two months, our team has visited applicants in their home towns and villages to assess their individual needs and living situations.
We have now selected 50 children to join the 2025 course, which will be held at our new Shabaha Children’s Home in Moshi.
