The lack of affordable housing for poor families in Moshi, Tanzania forces many households to live in overcrowded rented rooms with no electricity and water supply or self-build mud huts on illegal land.
In June 2020, Kijana Kwanza purchased a 1-acre plot close to Bonite Bottlers, about 10 minutes’ drive outside of town to develop a social housing project that will provide affordable and dignified housing to low-income families. The plot has been designed to include 4 clusters of 7 housing units or a total of 28 units. Each house includes 3 bedrooms, a living area, kitchen and bathroom, available for rent at Tsh. 50,000, which is one-third of the market price. As a comparison, this is cost of renting 2 small rooms in town, with no electricity or a water supply.
Phase 1 of the project, consisting of 7 housing units, was built in 2021. We are now appealing to fund 7 further units in preparation for the construction of Phase 2 in September 2022.
